When can you spare the door?
For a business, that can matter as much as choosing the lock. The front entrance might be busy all morning. The back door might be needed for a delivery. Even a small repair needs to fit somewhere into the working day.
At Nation Auto Locksmith, we provide commercial locksmith services in Hamilton, ON, with more than 20 years in the trade. We help with faulty locks, replacement hardware, rekeying and business key arrangements. A visit can be for one door. It can also be a chance to sort out several small problems that have been left for later.
Call us with the work you have in mind and the times your entrances need to stay in use. You know how your business runs. That helps us plan a visit that makes sense for the place.
"Change the locks" can mean a few different things.
You might want new keys after taking over a unit. You might have a lock that keeps sticking. Or the hardware may work well, but the wrong people still have access. Those jobs call for different answers.
If the aim is to change who has working keys, rekeying may be enough. On suitable locks, this changes the key that operates them. The existing lock can stay in place if its condition allows.
A repair has another purpose. We look at what has stopped working and why. A key that sticks, a loose handle and a door that catches on its frame may feel like much the same nuisance to staff. They are not necessarily fixed by replacing the same part.
New hardware may be needed when a lock is worn, damaged or unsuitable for the door. Before choosing it, consider how often that entrance is used. A cupboard lock and a busy shop entrance have quite different working days.
Take a shop on Ottawa Street as an example. Customers may use the front door from opening until closing. A side entrance might be used only by staff. If both need work, deciding which can be taken out of use first is part of planning the visit.
A door that will not secure is harder to put off. Someone may have to stay behind because the business cannot be left unlocked.
Nation Auto Locksmith offers 24-hour emergency help. Explain whether the door can close and lock at all, then check current timing for your address. If there has been damage, mention that at the start.
For a fault that comes and goes, a note about when it happens can help. Does the door stick after a busy afternoon? Did the handle become loose after something struck it? You do not need to work out the cause yourself.
Where a door uses specialist hardware or an electronic access system, we need to check the setup before confirming the work. Keep any model details or earlier service records available if you have them.
Start with the rooms and the people. The office manager may need access to most of the building. A cleaner may need only certain areas. A driver delivering stock may not need a key at all, provided someone is there to receive the delivery.
You can sketch that out on paper. It does not need to look like a building plan.
For compatible locks, keying them alike lets one key open those doors. This can be useful where the same people should have access to the same areas. It also means that anyone holding that key can open all the locks included in that arrangement.
A master key system allows a different setup. Individual keys can open particular doors while a master key opens a planned group of locks. The locks and keys need to be designed to work together. We cannot confirm the arrangement just by looking at the size of the keyring.
For a small office, a simple plan may be enough. You might only need to separate the main entrance from the room holding business records. Explain what you want to keep separate before buying hardware.
A bunch of keys handed over with a lease tells you how to get in. It does not tell you where every other copy is.
Review the doors that belong to your unit, including any side or rear entrance. If you rent, involve the landlord or building manager before arranging lock changes. A shared entrance may be part of a wider key system.
After a staff change, work from the keys that person held. Which doors did they open? Were any copies issued for weekend cover? Returning one key does not account for every copy that may have been made.
Keep the review specific. You may need to change access to a stockroom and office while leaving other locks alone. We can discuss what is practical once the existing hardware and key arrangement are clear.
The person booking the work may finish at five. Someone else might be the first to arrive tomorrow. Include that person in the handover plan, even if they cannot be there for the locksmith visit.
Work out who needs a new key, how many copies are required and where the spare will be kept. For a small team, a simple record is often useful:
Keep that record current when staff move roles or a spare is lent out. It is much easier than trying to remember who borrowed a key six months ago.
If you are arranging a local locksmith for a downtown Hamilton office or a workplace on the Mountain, include any sign-in or access details when booking. In a shared building, identify which doors need attention and who can approve the work.
The quote should make clear which locks, parts and keys are included. You can discuss urgent repairs separately from changes planned for later. Before the visit ends, keep the invoice and any supplied care or warranty details where the person managing the premises can find them.
Label the new keys before they go into drawers or onto keyrings. If an old key still opens an unchanged door, keep that clear too. A quick note now can save a fairly long hunt next week.
